The hike on Day 12 was Sam and Shy’s longest day yet @ over 19 miles. It ended with smoke, a large Snag, and a lightning tree.
I tried some new gear on the Colorado Trail, and used some tried and true favorites. This article provides a review of my primary gear and clothing.
The wildfire smoke was noticeable as we hiked out of Leadville, and the muted skies made for a creepy night at our campsite past Glacier Creek.
I’m always reminded of simple things when I hike – things I forget.
The target for the day was Leadville. It is amazing how town thoughts increase foot speed.
Serle Pass is easily one of my favorite Passes. It has the feel of a high Pass combined with the lush valleys below.
The long climb over from Frisco to Copper was not easy, and my tailbone suffered the steep downhill.
Meeting the Moose family on my way into Frisco was the highlight of my first week on the trail.
The climb over early morning Georgia Pass was gorgeous!
I just missed wildflower season at Kenosha Pass, but it was still a beautiful section of trail – with it’s crazy cows!
I love Six Mile Meadow. It was the second best part of Day 3. The first best part was my Deer Friend.
Day Two on the Colorado Trail provided great water sources and some tough climbs for these green trail legs!
The first day on the Colorado Trail included hikers, Bear, deer, and thunderstorms.
My Colorado Trail Hike is about a week out. I’m finalizing last minutes details, crossing a few t’s and dotting a few i’s as I get ready go.
The Big Three in this Year’s Colorado Trail Gear List have gone through some big changes. Zpacks and Katabatic are both in the lineup for the first time.
Highlights of Mattabesett Section 12 included Highland Pond Preserve, Higby Mountain, and busting my butt on the sidewalk.
Highlights of Mattabesett Section 11 on The New England trail included great views, a good cardio workout, and an encounter with a little Cray Cray Weed.
The NET Mattabesett Section 10 made me work for my views, compared to prior New England Trail sections, but they were worth it!
New England Trail, Mattabesett Section 09 has a lot of variety, making it an interesting section of trail. You can even stop for lunch along the way.
NET Menunkatuck Section 8 has beautiful rolling forests, and wide, well marked trails. Much of this section is old forest and logging roads.
NET Mattabesett Section 4 is my favorite section of The New England Trail so far. With Bear Rock and Miller’s Pond, there is a lot to enjoy on this hike.
I hiked NET Mattabesett Section 3 on an absolutely beautiful day, which made the road walks through old New England countryside a compliment to the trail.
The NET Mattabesett Section 2 is slightly less maintained than Section 1 of the Mattabesett, but still a very nice section of trail.
Section One of the Mattabesett Trail is a nice section of trail that has a little bit of everything. No matter your hiking style, you will enjoy it.
I enjoyed my days in Pagosa Springs, but was ready to return to the trail. Snow made the mountains impassable, so I headed for Creede Colorado.
Banded Peak Ranch was the end of what ended up being a very long few days in the San Juans. Although beautiful, that section left me tired and battered.
The San Juan Mountains would not let me leave without providing a little blood, but the Elk would provide the way out.
My Arizona Trail Clothing Layers worked out well. There is only one thing that I would have changed on this trip.
There was not much I would have changed about my Arizona Trail Resupply Plan in the first two weeks. There were a couple though.
I absolutely LOVE long distance hiking, but making the decision to leave the trail during these uncertain times was not hard for me.
I mistakenly thought Manning Camp was at the summit, so I found myself becoming unusually frustrated when I continued climbing. So much is psychological.
The climb up to Grass Shack Campsite, via Mica Mountain, was beautiful.
Sometimes the best pizza in the world is the unexpected pizza. This was definitely the case today as a shared a large pizza at a trail head.
I love the mining interpretive plaques in the Santa Rita mountains, but they are a mileage killer for me! Still love the history lessons though.
The climb out of Patagonia was a beast that resulted in a pulled butt cheek that plagued me for a few days.
Patagonia, AZ was a great little trail town with nice people, and AWESOME blueberry pancakes.
